This week, the city unveiled a new crosswalk design at the corner of 5th and Spring downtown that will soon be found at 53 intersections around L.A. Our own Deborah Murphy spoke at the press conference (right after Mayor Villaraigosa!) on how the crosswalks will make pedestrians safer. Read more about the crosswalks and see our photos. Last month we headed to Leimert Park for our latest community meeting. About 40 enthusiastic local residents highlighted pedestrian problem areas on maps of the neighborhood and brainstormed ways to make walking safer and more accessible in South L.A. Read the report from the meeting. Were you one of the walkers who strolled Figueroa with us during the last CicLAvia? Friend of LA Walks Ana Haase-Reed has produced a film of the first-ever WalkLAvia featuring all the Sunday strollers (and more than a few dogs). Thanks to Ana for such beautiful documentation of the day! Watch the WalkLAvia video. According to a recent L.A. Weekly article, a staggering 48 percent of Los Angeles's traffic accidents are hit-and-runs, compared to 11 percent nationwide. We have some ideas for how the city can better respond to—and prevent—hit-and-runs. Read the L.A. Weekly article and our response.
