AB 700 - California Arts Council

Arts for LA urges you to act now to voice support for AB 700.

AB 700, The Creative Industries & Community Economic Revitalization Act of 2010, goes before the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, May 20th, 2009.

This bill would allocate 20% of the sales tax revenue from the sale of art and art supplies to the California Arts Council.  This allocation could generate over $20 million per year in support of the CAC.

Angelenos are in a unique position to speak out in favor of AB 700.  California State Assemblymember Kevin De Leon (45th Assembly District), who represents East Hollywood, Echo Park, Silverlake, Atwater Village and surrounding environs (click for map), is the Assembly Appropriations Committee Chair and needs to hear from his constituents regarding the positive effects of AB 700 on the local and statewide creative economy.

Take two minutes today to send an email and fax to De Leon, Governor Schwarzenegger and the members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

AB 700, the Creative Industries and Community Revitalization Act of 2010 will invest in the economic revitalization of California's communities by encouraging joint partnerships to enhance investment of public resources to enable the growth of the creative economy throughout the state.

The arts create a life-long learning environment for all age groups and demographics.

The arts attract tourism dollars, including the "stay-cation" dollars of local residents.

The arts should be an equal partner in the economic stimulus conversation because the arts and creative industries create jobs, provide job training services, and contribute to community revitalization when artists and arts venues locate to urban, suburban and rural areas.

California needs to strengthen the artistic and cultural infrastructure state-wide, for vibrant communities that will be a desirable location in which to live, work and raise a family.

California needs to educate the 21st century workforce through arts and new media integration for all California students.

Businesses want to locate where they can find highly-educated and highly-skilled workers.  To attract a knowledgeable and creative workforce to revitalize urban and rural areas, California needs to invest in regional economic development and create new partnerships and job opportunities that attract and retain innovative companies and entrepeneurs.
