Steven A. Olsen Vice Chancellor – Finance, Budget and Capital Programs, UCLA
"Built in response to the damage incurred by the old hospital structure after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is one of the most ambitious endeavors I have been a part of putting together. One of the first total replacement hospital projects to be built in accordance with the latest seismic-safety standards, the new hospital is remarkably strong and flexible – designed to meet the evolving needs of 21st century patient care and research."
Steven A. Olsen joined UCLA in 1999 as vice chancellor of finance and budget, and assumed responsibility for campus capital programs in 2006. Olsen is UCLA's chief financial officer, and serves as the principal financial advisor to Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams. He is directly responsible for three major business functions at UCLA: campus financial, budgetary and strategic planning processes; planning, design and construction of all campus buildings; and campus internal controls programs. Prior to joining UCLA, Olsen served as chief deputy director of the California State Department of General Services, responsible for overall planning and daily operations of the state's real estate, procurement, telecommunications and school construction businesses. In 1991, Governor Pete Wilson appointed Olsen deputy director of the State Department of Finance, where he was responsible for development of state budgetary strategy and for conduct of budget negotiations with the California Legislature. He also worked for 11 years in the California Legislature, eventually serving as chief fiscal advisor to the Senate Republican leader.
In 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Olsen to the 21-member California Performance Review (CPR) Commission, a group of business, labor, local government and public policy experts responsible for conducting statewide hearings on the CPR's recommendations to the governor. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of the Geffen Playhouse, the Thirty Meter Telescope and the Los Angeles Children's Chorus. Olsen graduated from UCLA summa cum laude in 1977 with majors in political science and economics. He also earned a master's degree in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979.
