Each year AIA Los Angeles presents a critical agenda of key environmental design issues to City leaders and pushes for their adoption as part of our annual AIA/LA Legislative Day at City Hall. This annual event allows the AIA/LA membership direct access to civic leaders, councilmembers and planning deputies and serves as a chance to influence public policy by sharing a pro-active slate of issue briefs.
On Friday, October 16th, more than seventy-five architects and design professionals converged on Los Angeles City Hall for the 2009 Architects Advocacy Breakfast. Councilmember Ed P. Reyes greeted the crowd with support for the profession. Other notables included: Gail Goldberg, Director of City Planning; Deborah Weintraub Deputy City Engineer; CRA/LA Commissioner Alejandro Ortiz; Board of Public Works Commissioner Paula Daniels and LADWP Commissioner Jonathan Parfrey. Additionally, numerous council planning deputies and civic leaders stopped by to hear the [latest slate of issue briefs](http://www.scribd.com/doc/21813531) that were jointly presented by AIA/LA President John Kaliski and James Favaro, Co-Chair of the Political Outreach Committee.
[The 2009 slate of legislative issue briefs](http://www.scribd.com/doc/21813531) included advocating for alternative project delivery methods, instituting an office of architecture and urban design, implementing three demonstration projects, facilitating distributed power generation for renewable energy, supporting the adoption of the revised Cultural Heritage Ordinance and appointing more architects to serve on city commissions.
Throughout the day, delegates from AIA Los Angeles met with numerous Council Members, the Office of the Mayor, The Department of City Planning and the Board of Public Works. As architects and designers continue to weigh in on the importance of architecture and urban design matters in shaping public policy, we will continue to meet with our civic leadership on an ongoing basis.
Your commitment and involvement is needed now more than ever.
On Tuesday, November 10th at the next Political Outreach Committee meeting, we will discuss the status of our action items and strategize a plan for moving forward. Resulting from our progress at 2009 Legislative Day, we have several key opportunities to influence policy through the lens of design.
